Gareth Smyth
CEO
As CEO of Hilton Smythe, Gareth sets the overall strategy and direction of the business while also assisting with complex transactions and larger client deals. He frequently acts as an Expert Witness in company valuations for matrimonial proceedings and shareholder disputes.
With a background in business sales and acquisitions since 2016, Gareth has advised on hundreds of transactions, ranging from micro-business sales to multi-million-pound deals. He has a strong interest in the tech and digital sectors, as well as professional services, and works closely with Private Equity firms on acquisition strategies and deal structuring. One of his most interesting projects involved advising a global Metaverse brand on a high-value merger.
Gareth brings a dynamic, deal-making edge to Hilton Smythe, always seeking innovative solutions and inspiring his team to deliver the best results for clients. His qualifications include an LLB (Hons) in Law and an MSc in International Corporate Finance (Distinction).
He believes that planning is key when buying or selling a business and warns against choosing advisors based solely on fees – good professionals aren’t always the cheapest. He also emphasises that selling a business is not like selling a house; it requires a far more strategic approach.
Outside of work, Gareth is a dedicated Bolton Wanderers fan, enjoys travelling, and values time with family and friends. If he weren’t in this industry, he’d have pursued a career as an airline pilot. His colleagues describe him assupportive, knowledgeable, and driven.
